Bagdadi, Colaba

Hey foodies!

Today’s review will be on Bagdadi, a restaurant that’s been in business since 125 years or so, that’s what we heard.  A restaurant that’s so old and still overly crowded needed a little space in our blog too. Hence we went here one Sunday afternoon for lunch. This place was, no surprises here, super crowded and hence we had to wait for 20 minutes before we got a table to ourselves inside.

This is a no fancy restaurant where you may have to share tables with unknown people, but since we were a large group, we had that benefit of no share. There is not much of an ambience in places like these. The service is fast, you order, eat and walk out. It is that kind of a place.

Let’s see what we ate that day!

Chicken Fry!

1.   Chicken Fry: This one is bright red coloured fried chicken. It comes with a fried half potato, which is something different but tasteless. The chicken is coated with yummy batter and fried. The exterior is really nice and crispy. This was a nice dish for starters. The meat was well cooked. It’s a little oily since it is fried, but a dish you can try out!
Comes with a side of a half fried potato.

2.   Chicken Shaami Kabab: They serve these cutlets with onions and green chutney, which is very nice. The kababs were very soft and delicious. It’s not too spicy which means everybody will like it. We too, loved it.

Soft and Juicy kababs!

3.   Chicken Boti Masala: This is red colored gravy which is slightly spicy. It had chicken pieces in it that weren’t that well-cooked. This dish was fairly average. We also ordered the huge tandoori roti to go with all the gravies that we ordered.

It was average..

4.   Chicken Bhuna Gravy: This was again an average dish. The meat wasn’t cooked well in this dish too, so we had to eat only the gravy. We were disappointed by this time because we expected this place to be so good, but it wasn’t!
Chicken Bhuna Gravy

Looks so appetizing, but was strictly average.

The huge ass tandoori naan to go with all the gravies..

5.   Chicken Nargis Gravy: Among all that we ordered, this was what we loved. It had nice, rich gravy and it tasted really good too. The chicken was well cooked and we liked it. But still, we’ve had so much better that this before.

This was still so much better than the others!

6.   Caramel Custard: A staple dessert to order in a place like this. It was good, not too sweet and a perfect ending to a not-so-perfect meal.
Caramel Custard... What a lovely sight!

Honestly, we don’t understand the hype over this place. Yes, it’s a very old place that serves food at low rates, but we did not love the food here. It’s nice to go and visit the place once in your lifetime, and that’s about it! Our bill was surely 1000+ bucks btw.

Food: 2.5 / 5
Ambience: None
VFM: 3.5 / 5
Service: 4 / 5

We recommend Chicken Shaami Kabab if you do visit this place.
